I have to travel from Orewa to Auckland CBD every morning and over
the last year I've noticed the traffic progressively deteriorate more so
now that the new bus system has been put into place. The reality is that
Auckland busses are just too expensive to use so I doubt they'll have
any positive effect on our current traffic problems.
For my wife and I to travel in by bus would cost us $360/month, not much
less than driving our car in. What's probably happened is all those
people who usually travel by bus now have the opportunity to drive to a
depot rather than walk to a bus stop. The result is still a crap and
deteriorating Auckland traffic system, millions of dollars down and
wasted on a less than successful bus system.
The rising Auckland cost of living and houses forcing people further out
of Auckland, along with the increase in fuel prices making it too
expensive to travel that extra distance and the nuisance of having to
spend 4 hours plus in traffic every day, I’m sure people will soon
realize the benefits of moving to other less congested cities in New
Zealand. |

Auckland traffic is getting worse, and it seems
Transit is determined to make us suffer more by installing those darned
on-ramp signals! Yes, that will ease the congestion for those already on
the motorway, but what about those roads coming onto the motorway? The
traffic backlogs like crazy to the smaller roads. Don't transfer the
problem from the motorway to somewhere else! Is this Transit's way of
saying "hey, I've fixed the traffic on the motorway"? What a waste of
taxpayers' money. Put taxpayers' money to better use. We need bigger,
wider roads. And better road designs. And better public transport. Not
those darned on-ramp signals!
And for those cyclists who do not pay roadtax,
keep to the footpath. I'm not an anti-cyclist, but I can see why some
drivers hate them. They can't cycle as fast as cars, and with our roads
being so narrow, they end up hogging the cars behind them - thus
contributing to slowing down traffic. Some self-righteous cyclists think
they are 'easing traffic' by cycling. Yes they are...but only if they
keep to the footpaths and not the road! What makes it worse is when they
cycle side-by-side. Ugh. |

Auckland traffic has been crazy lately! There are too many roadworks
closing roads and diverting traffic so that the usual routes are
extremely clogged. Is it necessary to close certain roads (I'm thinking
Mangakiekie Ave) - this closure has caused chaos in our area! |

I have been driving in Auckland for about 4 years or so and I think
there are a few problems with Aucklands traffic, in particular the
motorways and how they are built.
Merging lanes are the biggest mistake the government have thought of.
People don't like merging anywhere let alone at high speeds on the
motorway. An example of this is the North-bound Mount Wellington exit in
Auckland.
Recently, the left lane was made to be an exit only lane and it was the
best thing that could've happened to that motorway. Suddenly there were
no jams and people were able to stay in the right 2 lanes if they were
going to the city and if not, jump into the left lane to get off,
however... Once again, the government have sabotaged their own success
and have reinstated the merging lane... Now we have nothing but jams
around that area.
In addition to off-ramps are the onramps. People coming onto the
motorway too slow and being forced to merge with higher speed traffic.
That in itself causes a jam.
Now it's no good saying these problems without suggesting a solution.
What I think we should do is have every on-ramp create a 3rd or even 4th
lane and every off-ramp remove the 3rd or 4th lane created by the
previous on-ramp.
This would avoid the forced merging on the motorways altogether and
gives you a whole lane to yourself in order to match your speed to that
of the other lanes.
If we don't do that, in order to get rid of the jams, we'd have to start
dealing with teaching people HOW to merge and given the broad variety of
cultures in our country, that will be thee single most greatest
challenge ever put to our government.
The thing with merging is you need to be confident about it and actually
get up to speed and into the lane as soon as possible! Don't just follow
the outside line in and hope for the best! I see a lot of (dare I say
it) "people movers" filled with polynesians or maori's mostly (only a
generalisation) doing this and after eventually merging into the lane,
they do 70 freaking K's! Drive at A HUNDRED! it isn't that hard to do.
I think it is WAY TO EASY to get your licence in this country if you
have come from another. Especially in the islands where development is
limited. A pre-requisit of entry into this country should be a driving
test. If you don't pass, you get declined entry. When I went for a
driving test, if you didn't maintain a speed within 5 kph of the speed
limit, you were considered incompetent and you failed the test. Make
that test compulsory for entry to the country too!
Another thing that causes jams are marked police cars with flashing
lights (or even without flashing lights) on the side of the road.
WHAT IS WITH THAT!
We are all a bunch of sadists. We ACTUALLY all slow down to take a look
at what the police are doing there and who's been hit and how much
damage there is etc etc. GET A F***ING LIFE! Don't worry about what THEY
are doing, worry about what YOU are doing. I have seen numerous
nose-to-tails that have simply occured because the car behind is too
busy staring at what's going on.
Traffic cars should be mufty... NO markings on them anywhere and when
they have pulled the concerned car over or have stopped the vehicle on
the safety shoulder, TURN OFF THE DAM LIGHTS! It seems the majority of
people are dazed by the flashing lights too!
Plus, if we make the cars mufty, then you never know where they are so
people would then drive to the speed limit more often instead of slowing
down every time you see a police car to either check out why it's there
or to avoid getting a ticket.
Boy Racers... BAN THE F***ERS. I think we should implement a similar law
to Australia whereby they are given a single chance and after that,
their car is crushed.
This country is WAY too tolerant on these people and that is why we have
such a high re-offence rate. I bet if you crushed their car, they'd
NEVER speed again. All I can say is... GOOD! That's how it should be!
Treat cars like lethal weapons... Because in the wrong hands, they may
as well be.
A little off the topic of traffic but definitely food for thought.
The on-ramp and off-ramp extra lane thing is the main point I wish to
push though. I think it would reduce traffic jams incredibly.
EXIT-ONLY is the way to go! Get RID of MERGING LANES! Especially on
MOTORWAYS! |

Arrrrgh its always shocking, I have given public transport a go as i was
keen on the idea of sitting back and relaxing going to and from work. Ha
this was a pure joke, having to wake up at 5.30am (and hour earlier than
normal) to catch a train at 6.45 (forty five minutes earlier than i
would if I drove) from new lynn, then the waiting around for the
connecting train to take me to Panmure. Return is even worse for waiting
around and gets me home an hour later than i would normally.
Unfortunatly the buses are even worse and i wouldnt even look at going
on one unless i was desperate considering the bus drivers dont even seem
to know where they are going.
Auckland traffic is pure crap but not as bad as the public transport, I
would be nice if some tax payer money went to finding a solution |

I was recently the victim in a motor vehicle incident. I say
'incident' because it was no 'accident' that the idiot coming the other
way was doing in excess of 80 kilometers per hour and consequently lost
control of his vehicle, came across the center line and smacked into
mine before hitting the power pole that consequently fell directly
across my front windscreen.
SLOW DOWN!!!!! Auckland is a big rush. People are trying to merge and
race to get in before the car next to them, running orange lights,
running RED lights, zipping in and out of lanes on the crawling motorway
only to end up 2 cars ahead of where they were or sometimes even BEHIND
where they started.
If you're merging, MERGE! Don't WAIT until the lane you're in runs out
and it's too late. MERGE! Indicate, and move into the next available
space.
To those already on the motorway, LET THEM IN for god sake. slow down
and let the merging traffic come over.
If the government is so persistent with these "Merging" lanes then we
should at least know how to USE the things.
SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION.
The driving age should be raised to 18 and the tests should be WAY
harder and more specific. People should LEARN how to control the lethal
weapon they're driving.
A motor vehicle is no different to a gun. Both can take someone or
several people's lives when mishandled.
Make the licence to use a motor vehicle as strict and age limiting as
that of one to use a firearm!
Clean up this city. Get the crap and trashy drivers OFF the road, get
rid of MERGING lanes and make tests etc more difficult to pass before
handing the licence to a lethal weapon out to people.
That's all I have to say. |

I have just been on the Police website to try and find out where I
can make a suggestion regarding the traffic lights at the corner of
Great South Road, Orams Road and Browns Road. I could not find anywhere
to register my suggestion so here I am!!
The volume of traffic coming from Orams and either turning or going
straight ahead is far greater than the traffic coming from Browns Road.
Despite this, the lights remain on for a longer time for Browns Road
than for Orams, causing a huge backup of traffic on Orams Road. I come
through anytime from 6.00am to 9.30am and there is no difference. Browns
Road traffic have no back up what so ever - all cars get through on
their light. |

Getting worse and worse every year. What has happened this last week
with the Great North Road/Titirangi Road and Rata Street intersections
in New Lynn. It has been impossible to move forward more than 1 inch at
a time.
I have had to abort my travel plans, cut thru the back of the Warehouse
carpark to get back out on to Great North Road and go in to the city via
Kingsland. I was late for work both Tuesday and Wednesday. Had to leave
home 15 minutes earlier this morning to ensure I got to work on time.
Even then I had to go thru kingsland as the Rata Street intersection was
still clogged. |

South Auckland has a major problem with people running red lights
and not just one, often its 5-6 cars who will run the red light without
even thinking, this has been happening now for over 5 years yet not once
have I seen the police checking this or red light cameras installed.
I catch the bus in the morning from Takapuna to the city and love the
bus lane as it makes it a quick trip. However it is frustrating that the
buses cluster, ie 2 or 3 arrive so close together and then there's
nothing for 20 mins and this is at peak time!! Getting the bus home at
night can also involve some patience! |

It's worse in different areas. Constelation Drive - Albany Offramp
is a nightmare at 5pm. Do not be caught there if you're in a hurry. It's
heaps better than the old East Coast Road days but it still does need
attention, especially in the area identified above. |

Some improvements in attitude in LTNZ Wellington is all that would
be necessary to save many, many hours of wasted time and enough fuel and
emissions to save the planet. All LTNZ have to do is try and move the
traffic instead of stopping it.
Here's how:
Right hand turn arrows hold up motorists, often waiting for an empty
road. We drove around England last year and hardly saw a single
right-turn arrow. Over there nearly all intersections have roundabouts.
These are mostly as simple as a white circle in the centre of the
intersection and some lane markings and signeage. It could be done in
one day and the traffic lights (and red-light cameras) put into landfill
where they belong.
At the very least, the red lights should only stay on for 5 seconds,
then go out. Some intersections already do that, such as Weymouth/Gt
South Rd, Manurewa. Te Irirangi Drive is the worst place to turn right,
usually waiting on a stupid red light blocking an empty road. Many
drivers ignore it.
Pedestrian crossings: once the red light shows for pedestrians, the
traffic light should start flashing yellow 'proceed with care' as in
England. So unless there is a granny with a walking frame, the cars can
get moving. The worst example I know is the pedestrian crossing as you
leave Auckland Airport International terminal. Cars and buses wait about
a minute for an empty crossing with the pedestrians long gone.
To improve driver concentration, take away all the advisory speed signs
on corners. There are none in England, except the odd SLOW sign on a
tight bend. It sure makes you concentrate on your driving. In NZ we get
spoon-fed the speed to drive at and feel comfortable adding 20 or 30 kmh
to the speed shown on the sign. |

This is another copy of a letter I sent to the On Ramp light team,
still awaiting a reply. It is probably because they get so many
complaints.
Hello Once Again
I still haven’t had feedback from the first one. Anyway here goes.
1. If as you say the lights and motorways are monitored by CCTV why
isn’t someone monitoring if these lights actually need to go on or the
speed at which they change from red to green is shortened when the
motorways are running freely?
2. What determines whether they are activated or not?
3. Why at Hobson St is there a light at all, the cars coming onto the
motorway have a lane to themselves for a long way in which time they get
to merge.
4. “Merge” it’s a 5 letter word that Kiwis don’t like. But education on
how to do this would be great – get Scott Dixon to show us – they don’t
have on ramp lights at the Indy 500.
5. Have you thought of the flow back effects of On Ramp lights at
Gillies Ave and the upcoming ones at Greenlane. As soon as you turn on
the ones at Greenlane (as has happened at Gillies Ave) you will cripple
the entire Greenlane Ellerslie area. Again an On ramp light there is a
waste as you are merging into an OFF ramp at Market Rd, there is ample
time to merge.
6. The light phasing at Great South Rd - Campbell Rd Intersection is not
working efficiently. On the one hand you get a Right turn signal but
can’t go straight ahead, when you finally do get to go straight ahead
the 2nd set of lights are only on for such a short time that about 5
cars get to go through. My office is 500m from these lights and
currently as I write this, the cars are cued up another 300m back to
Rockfield Rd. Look it up on your maps!!
7. RED LIGHT CAMERAS: if you want to stop this happening as much then 2
main things need to occur. Firstly put Yellow Lines across the
intersection as is on Cook & Nelson St by the Police Station, so if you
are monitoring these lights as you say, then give people tickets for
parking over an intersection. I am sure that the amount of revenue you
would collect would far outweigh the cost of paying people to monitor
this. Eventually once people start taking notice because of the fines
they are getting this problem will lessen. The reason that parking over
an intersection is a problem is that it hampers the normal flow of
people in cars going through an intersection. Secondly pedestrians
should be fined for jaywalking when the lights change – cars get held up
and then will risk running a red light because they are waiting for
someone to cross the lights – I have seen drivers try to hit these
people who are oblivious of their actions as they don’t get the light
phases. Why not have the Countdowns on ALL the lights around the city!!
8. Traffic Fines should be shown on Veda (Baycorp) – If you can’t leave
the country while still having fines to pay then why not share this
information to the Credit Agencies. It will also have a flow on affect
to giving people credit that have a large amount of traffic fines. The
LTSA do it if you haven’t re registered your vehicle in time so why not
do it across the board. |

Concerned
Auckland Traffic??
Crazy! If Londoners drove this way they would have gridlock.
Co-Operate! Think SPACE,.. for everyone. Let that other car in. Let them
merge or turn into a side road.
EXPECT that other car to cross your path, I mean ANTICIPATE.
GIVE signals and HEED others signals!
I DO MEAN Buses and Taxis too!
How do I turn into a side street off Khyber Pass across the bus lane AND
SURVIVE if you ignore my signal????
DON'T gun the traffic lights.. I want to survive!
Put lane marking well before intersections, so I know which lane to use.
Hang them from the traffic lights too.. the new ones are too low.. so a
waste of money.
Phase lights correctly. Left turn from Parnell Rise to Stanley Street is
stop-go-stop-go. Fix it!
Make buses user friendly. No fingers if I toot a warning. You deserved
it!
Buses more often than every 20 minutes on Manukau Rd in the rush hour!
Through-ticketing, stop the squabbling and make it happen.
Cut the diesel stink from these buses, and retrain the drivers. Some are
shockers, some okay.
Any more? Oh the ning-nong ramp signals are stupid and will not work.
Having stop-go cars and go-go heavy trucks on the drag up Grafton gulley
is a recipe for disaster. Someone will end up under the back bogie of a
44-tonner.
Cut the points of conflict where our roads are two lanes then one then
two then one. NUTS!
And cyclists and scooter riders,.. cut the idiocy or you will be
TEMPORARY KIWIS!
And schools? Our treasures are there, SLOW.
Cellphones? Hands-free ONLY please. I will honk to drown your call if
you endanger me this way, okay?
Finally WAKE UP, there is world out there.
You are not the only one on the road! |

I fully endorse the comments of Murray.
I have driven in peak traffic in other countries and it is the drivers
of Auckland themselves that are causing the delays. EVERYONE should
drive at the maximum speed allowed during peak hours and there would be
no problem.
The rubbernecking syndrome is not limited to accidents only.I have seen
the domino effect developing where a car parked at the side of the road,
causing a pile up.
In some countries the traffic authorities unoffcially allow peak traffic
to move over the speed limit allowed without any accidents.
This one factor; proper speed will aleviate al lot of the enormous
frustration of the drivers.
But who has the guts to initiate such a move? |

Make sure if you have any traffic suggestions regarding lane

email NZ Herald traffic reporter at this website - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/author/index.cfm?a_id=127

Traffic where I come from in Auckland isnt usually too bad...But
this morning it took me 1 hour to get to Newton from Hillsborough. It
usually takes me 20min max. There were no accidents, no road works, no
parked cars..there was really no reason for the traffic, except the
light phasing at the intersection of queenstown and herd road's. I think
light phasing is a major cause of traffic jams in Auckland and needs to
be looked at. Another intersection which has light phasing problems is
the right turn light from great south road onto church street, it only
lets 3 cars through during peak traffic! |

Problems with Auckland traffic are exacerbated by poor driving
skills. Very few people seem to be able to make proper use of motorway
lanes and it is common to have even relatively light traffic delayed by
people meandering along at 80 kph in all 3 lanes. People sit in the fast
lane and others underpass in the slow lanes which is a recipe for
disaster. A compulsory period of driving on any major European motorway
system would probably wake up the ideas of a few drivers!
Another problem is lack of
indicator use (particularly by SUV drivers for some reason) or on the
other hand an assumption that once the indicators are on that lane
changes can occur immediately.
Compared to many countries
I have driven in, Auckland does not have excessively high traffic
volumes and an adherence to simple practices such as above would
immediately improve the flows.

A co-ordinated real-time traffic advisory system that covered all

You can make the bus fares more acceptable. I have been using the
bus for 3 years from Torbay, and $240.00 per month is a good installment

Very congested for such a small city. I live south and the South Western
is actually pretty good but the Southern motorway is terrible and all
road development is usually late in coming and by the time the new
raoding is usable, it's usually up to new capacity, there is no forward
thinking. Does not help that the public transport system is nigh on non-existant
and unreliable. If there was a good rail system you could get a large
amount of cars off the road. |

The focus on private vehicles must end. Congestion and air pollution
is the direct result of an undeveloped public transport system.
The way forward is to
maximmise rail in the south and west, with electric trains and a rapid
rail link to the airport. In the North and East dedicated busways seem
to be the best option.
Ultimately, neither Labour
or National governments will deliver the public transport system
Auckland needs - they've both wasted 150 years in power. A stronger
Green presence in parliament is the only way forward for transport in
Auckland. |

There's certainly plenty of it. I think the frustrations experienced
by many drivers are starting to impede on our driving, eg running red
lights. Often when a light is green, you really have to check that noone
is still coming through.
Honestly it would take more
than 10 sec to fully comment on the state of Akd traffic. I'm
considering writing a paper on it for my next assignment at Massey, so i
will put those thoughts down there.
I think Akd is a great
place to live and it's a shame that's it becoming increasingly difficult
to actually move around the city.
We need to take a fresh
look at the problem and come up with some alternatives of getting people
out of their cars onto public transport. How do we do this?? I think the
companies / councils seriously have to look at providing the service
first and then more people will use the buses, ferries etc.
I catch the bus in the
morning from Takapuna to the city and love the bus lane as it makes it a
quick trip. However it is frustrating that the buses cluster, ie 2 or 3
arrive so close together and then there's nothing for 20 mins and this

I'll stop now else i will
keep going forever... |

Insufferable and third world. I have lived and worked all around the
world and this is my context. Major investment is needed quickly,
including recruitment of offshore workforce as ours will never cope
alone.An alternative
transport solution is urgently required including upgrade of ferries,
rail, bus and other infrastructure. People need to believe in the change
and it needs to cost less than their cars. But don't charge for cars
inner city. Make the business case for public transport pay its own way. |

The roads are like water pipes , the big pipe must be at least the sum
of the small ones, making lanes from onramp to off ramp would be a good
start.Still why
bother if you are pitching the public toward buses, plus slow to respond
to walking, cycling and ignoring motorcycles or tacking them on as an
afterthought/p.c. decision |

Diabolical. I don't have to travel peak times thank goodness, but it
is still very frustrating getting around. You can never tell if your
journey that should take 30 mins (10 mins in Christchurch) will take an
hour or more. With 1 mil people, Auckland should receive 1/4 of the
roading allocation to correct this nightmare. |

In 1950 Aucklanders used 100 million trips on public transport compared
to about 60 million trips in 2006.(Aucklands population has nearly
doubled during that period) The price of public transport in Auckland is
arguably too high. Auckland's Public transport system has the worse
patronage in Australasia. This is a reinforcing or cyclic problem where
the lack of passengers leads to inadequate and expensive services which
discourage people from using it in the first place. There are more cars
per capita in Auckland than any other city in the world.
Auckland regional council
spent $66 million in subsidising bus fares last year(Thats our money).
the public spent $99 on top of that subsidy to pay for buses. while the
bus company that got $63 million of the $66 million dollars in subsidies
made a profit of over $33 million dollars- over half of the government
subsidy. Do you see something wrong here? |

We need to ban cars with less than two people in during peak times. |

Very, Very bad. I live in Pukekohe and would like to take the train,
however it doesn't fit with my work schedule and am forced to take my
car. Leaving at 6:30am each morning It takes me approx 1.5 hours to get
to Greenlane where I work. Under light traffic this same journey would
take about 35 minutes. |

Auckland traffic is an absolute shambles. The improvements that are
being made don't seem to be helping much. If the government took a
harder stance on how many vehicles were coming into this country, this
may help in keeping the traffic levels down as well as obviously looking
at better solutions other than just widening roads |

PROBABLY ITS THE WORST AMONG ALL DEVELOPED COUNTRIES. THERE IS NOT MUCH
HOPE EITHER. ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM COULD ONLY BE TROMS/TRAINS.
GOVT. SHOULD SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT LOCAL TRAINS & TRACKS. ALSO, THERE
SHOULD BE ANOTHER BRIDGE OR TUNNEL CONNECTIN NORTH SHORE AND CITY TO
AVOID TRAFFIC ON HARBOUR BRIDGE |

I think it is very crowded and there are to many traffic lights and on
thee motor way there should be more lanes plus a truck lane |
